Natural-fill Pillows Covered in Organic Cotton

Rejuvenating rest begins at the top!

One of the most important keys to getting a good night's sleep is choosing the right pillow. This is not always an easy selection to make, but hopefully we can help...

  • Your pillow must be the right height for your sleeping position.
    • Side sleepers need a relatively high, dense pillow to support their head in a natural position.
    • Back sleepers need a flatter pillow to keep the neck and spine aligned properly.
    • Those who sleep on their stomach need a very thin pillow.
NOTE: Sleeping on the stomach is not great for your neck and spine...you might want to try changing to another position.
    • People who switch positions during the night need a flat pillow for the time on their back or stomach, and a thicker pillow for the time on their side.
  • Your pillow must be in good condition.
Many people get so attached to their pillow that they do not realize it is worn out. To test your pillow fold it in half, squeeze out the air, and let go. If it doesn't quickly spring back open it's time for a new one.
  • Your pillow must be made of the right materials.
Store-bought pillows are typically filled with polyester or other synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, or down and feathers and covered with conventionally-grown cotton fabric or a cotton/poly blend. Synthetic fillings and polyester fabrics are manufactured from petrochemicals, which can offgas toxic and sensitivity-causing fumes. Down/feather pillows harbor dust mites and cause allergic reactions in many people. Our Pure-Rest pillows are made in California and filled with natural and organic materials, and are free of toxic chemicals. The organic cotton covers are soft and easy to clean. These pillows are naturally resistant to mites, mildew and water, and they feel great! Most can be made with a zipper for no additional charge, even if not indicated below.

organic pillow shredded rubberNatural/organic shredded rubber pillow for people who switch sleeping positions (and everyone else)

Many folks who change sleeping positions during the night choose down/feather pillows because the thickness can be adjusted as desired. But, as you might know, feather pillows have their problems: 1) they are not very comfortable when they matte down after the first few months; 2) they often cause allergic reactions; and 3) most down/feather pillows cannot be washed to keep dust mites under control.

A 100% natural shredded rubber pillow is an exceptionally healthy and wonderful alternative! The "cushy" filling of Pure-Rest's shredded rubber pillow can be arranged with a dip in the middle for back sleeping and higher areas on the sides for mid-night switches, which means no more pillow-punching at 2am! And the stitched woven cover pillow can be machine washed to keep it fresh and free of unwanted critters. We love this pillow so much, we think it's perfect for everyone!

  • Zippered covers provide easy access to the filling so you can remove some if the pillow is stuffed too full; or add filling if it's not high enough or flattens out a bit later on.
  • Knit fabric provides a softer sleeping surface than the damask covers, but it should not be washed without removing the filling (a rather messy process).
  • The stitched damask pillows can be machine washed on gentle cycle. Washing the zippered pillows is not recommended without removing the filling to avoid a potential mess in the washer, should the zipper open up during the process.
  • The fill-weights of Pure-Rest pillows are not listed because the company is in the process of standardizing the heights. To find out the weight please contact us with the size and type of pillow you are interested in.
  • Cotton is grown in the USA and Germany; rubber is grown in South East Asia; pillows are sewn in the USA.

organic pillow wool kapok rubberNatural/organic pillows for side sleepers (wool, kapok, molded rubber)

People who sleep on their side need a relatively high, dense pillow to support their head in a natural, straight position. Pure-Rest's 100% natural shredded rubber pillow (see above) is a good option for side sleepers because it is stuffed quite full and the stuffing can be removed to fine-tune the thickness to your head and comfort. Other options for side sleepers include their medium-fill eco-wool, medium-fill kapok*, molded natural rubber pillow, or a zippered kapok pillow which can be easily adjusted by adding or removing filling to create a loft that fits the way you sleep. Additional kapok filling can be purchased separately in case your sleeping pattern changes or it gets matted down over time.

Pure-Rest's cotton cover fabric is made in Germany; wool is from Northern California, Oregon, and Washington; rubber is grown in South East Asia; pillows are sewn in the USA. The fill-weights are not listed because Pure-Rest is in the process of standardizing pillow heights. To find out the weight please contact us with the size and type of pillow you are interested in.

* Also available with certified organic wool. Contact us for pricing (15-20% higher) and purchase. Eco Wool and certified organic wool pillows are filled with wool batting and tend to matte down in a relatively short time. For a fluffier and more resilient pillow, we recommend Organic Woolie Ball pillows, see below.
** Kapok is a silky, fluffy, resilient fiber from the seed pods of the tropical Ceiba pentandra tree, imported from South America or Southeast Asia. The non-zippered pillow can be machine washed, but needs to be completely dried in a dryer, then refluffed by hand or with a stick. To wash a zippered pillow remove filling, then hand wash and hang dry the outer only...machine washing will cause shinkage of 5-6% and will make a mess if the zipper opens.

Pure-Rest's Woolie Ball pillows are amazing! Unlike pillows filled with wool batting, these contain little woolen balls that resist the need to attach to each other, which keeps your pillow fluffy over years of use. The loose nature of the soft, balled-up wool also reduces pressure on the ear of side-sleepers.

Light-fill and low pillows are appropriate for back sleepers. Medium, heavy and high pillows work best for side sleepers and those who switch positions in the middle of the night. All of these pillow heights can be created with a zippered damask Woolie Ball pillow by adding or removing fill, which is our personal favorite.

You can machine wash these pillows on the delicate cycle and air-dry indoors, but try to wait till absolutely necessary because washing removes the lanolin. The zippered pillow will say "do not wash" to prevent a possible mess in your washing machine. If you pin closed the zipper and/or enclose in a pillow case the risk of opening is reduced. Fluff the pillow regularly to prevent matting.

Pure-Rest's Woolie Ball pillows are made with certified organic wool and covered in fancy European organic cotton ticking from Germany; wool is from Northern California, Oregon, and Washington; pillows are sewn in the USA. The fill-weights of Pure-Rest pillows are not listed because they are in the process of standardizing the heights. To find out the weight please contact us with the size and type of pillow you are interested in.

We also carry organic cotton-filled pillows (vegan), but cotton mattes down more than the other fillings so we don't usually recommend them to our customers. Contact us for pricing and availability.
