Berkey’s gravity-fed water systems are some of the most efficient filters available today, because they remove a comprehensive array of contaminants without a pressurized water source. Black Berkey Elements remove 99.999% of virus. Testing for virus removal by Black Berkey Elements was done using MS2 Coliphage and Fr Coliphage viruses. These were selected, by both the EPA and the Military, because of their small size relative to other virus strains and the difficulty in removing them. Each is approximately 24-26 nanometers in size, which makes them among the smallest of viruses. In comparison, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Coronaviruses have enveloped virions that measure approximately 120 nanometers in diameter.
Each standard-size Black Berkey® filter element has a life of 3,000 gallons, making the ongoing cost less than 2 cents per gallon of purified water. Berkey® stainless steel chambers are assembled in the USA from domestic and imported parts. Black Berkey® Purification Elements are made and assembled in the USA.
