Tatami Mats

These beautiful tatami mats are Japanese-style traditional floor and bed mats, made to fit American mattress sizes. They are 2 1/4 inches thick, very firm, heavy and sturdy; made of pesticide-free compressed rice straw with a tarp backing.

Tatami mats are used to increase air flow under a mattress on a solid-platform bed, or to use on the floor as a breathable base for a futon or shikibuton. Inadequate air circulation under a mattress can cause moisture buildup, and eventually mildew growth. The mat also helps prevent excess dipping and sagging, which can prolong the life of your mattress, futon or shikibuton. The edges are covered in a black fabric. Your tatami mat might have a slight, pleasant grassy smell which will dissipate in a short time.
